Our First Newsletter
Warm Greetings to all our wonderful Volunteers and Friends of FINO, Thanks to the multi-talented Patty, you are now looking at the debut of the FINO Newsletter! We will be sending this your way every few weeks with updates about Jalpa, the Leadership Through Language program, fundraising events, and volunteer socials. Speaking of which . . .
This Thursday, November 12th at 5pm, we are having our first Tea at the Tylosky’s. If you are not sure how to get to the Tylosky’s, meet Carlos and Nadia at the OXXO/Pemex (where we normally meet on Wednesdays) at 4:30pm and we will walk there together. Bring something small like a dessert or snack, and we’ll serve tea and other goodies. Note: Sara just returned from a conference in London with ENGLISH TEA! In other news, 200 Burro Festival calendars have just been put out around town in restaurants and businesses, so keep your eyes peeled and let all your local friends know to grab one! If you are still hanging onto calendars that you picked up at the September 12th social at Richard and Cheryl’s, keep on selling! Don’t forget, you can direct friends and family back home to our website www.finomex.org and the “How To Help” tab to order a Burro Calendar online via Pay Pal. Also, if you have calendars on hand, keep on selling, and please give the money you have collected so far to Nadia. In Jalpa, our 5th Leadership Through Language class of the season was held this past Wednesday. We received a lot of great feedback from our fabulous volunteers on how to keep improving the structure and content of the class for the kids. Recently we have created a seating arrangement for the kids based on their levels of English competence. We are very grateful to you dedicated volunteers for coming out, and will need at least 6 of you every week – 1 per table – so that each group of kids can learn at their own pace, guided by their volunteer. This will ensure that all the kids are being challenged and given focused attention. Our most advanced groups are already about to begin reading in English!
Another change to the LTL program has been Tuesday classes with Nadia. Every Tuesday, Nadia goes to Jalpa to spend 20 minutes at a time with each grade-group of our LTL kids. This allows for a focused, intense, mini-class in which we learn or review the vocabulary from our curriculum just before the Wednesday class with the volunteers. The LTL Library at the primaria school is undergoing a revamp-reorganize-rethink phase. Nadia has been busy attacking the book sorting and cataloguing system, and preparing credenciales (library cards) for the November 27th Inauguration of a school-wide reading program. Craig has just set up 3 computers donated by Computadoras Pro Jovenes (www.cpjmex.org) with fun, interactive voice-audio English programs which the kids just love. Finally, the Burro Festival will be held on Saturday, March 20th this coming year, and we are already in the first stage of preparation, called FIND SPONSORS!!! If anyone you know in SMA or back home is looking to donate to a worthy cause, please let them know that the Burro Festival is our most important fundraising event of the year in order to run the LTL children’s program. We would greatly appreciate all contributions to the funding of the festival, and we offer all businesses who sponsor the opportunity to advertise on our posters, pamphlets and at the Burro Festival as well. Our address for sending checks, as well as the Pay Pal option of donating, can be found online at http://www.finomex.org/howtohelp.html. Stay tuned for next month’s newsletter featuring our volunteers helping out in Jalpa with the LTL program! Many thanks again for your continued support and dedication, From the gang at F.I.N.O., A.C.
